The Deborah number is a dimensionless number, used in rheology to characterize how "fluid" a material is. Even some apparent solids "flow" if they are observed long enough; the origin of the name, coined by Prof. Markus Reiner, is the line "The mountains flowed before the Lord" in a song by prophetess Deborah recorded in the Bible (Judges 5:5).

Markus Reiner (Hebrew: מרכוס ריינר) was not only a major figure in rheology, he along with Eugene C. Bingham coined the term and founded a society for its study. He was born on 5 January 1886 in Czernowitz, and obtained a degree in Civil Engineering at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna. After the First World War, he emigrated to Palestine, where he worked as a civil engineer under the British mandate. After the founding of the state of Israel, he became a professor at the Technion (Technical University) in Haifa.
